5 Reasons To Take A Holiday In Thailand, The Land Of Smiles.

Thailand is a great country for a vacation. The relaxed pace of life and low cost of living make Thailand both a pleasant country to take a vacation and great value for money. Here I will showcase just 5 reasons to visit Thailand.

1. Great Food – Thai cuisine is a highlight of any visit to Thailand. Not only is Thai food a wonderful combination of flavours, it is always made with fresh ingredients, usually bought that morning at a nearby market.

Whilst Thai food is well-known for being spicy there are lots of dishes that are not spicy and it is always simple to order any dish without the chillies; in fact Thais will usually produce food with a low level of spiciness when they are serving foreigners, but not always! One of my favourite dishes is Thai Green Curry which can be really spicy or quite mild. I usually order mine mild as I have tired of being overwhelmed by chillies.

The other wonderful thing about Thai food is its value for money. Eating simpledishes on the street in Bangkok or anywhere else is usually less than a dollar per plate or bowl, and even eating in really nice restaurants usually results in a bill for around $10 per person.

2. Great Scenery – Thailand has a great variety of scenery to admire, from forests to amazing beaches. To see the best of Thailand’s scenery one must get away from Bangkok or other urban areas.

Mountain scenery in northern Thailand can be fantastic with beautiful mountains such as Doi Inthanon, Doi Ang Kang and Doi Chiang Dao easily accessible from the city of Chiang Mai. In fact Doi Suthep rises impressively from the suburbs of Chiang Mai and is a popular place to visit for the temple which provides a great view over the city.

In the central plains and north east, rice fields have a beauty of their own in the wet season. Beautiful verdant green fields separated by palm trees and temples make a really lovely picture but many people never get to see this side of Thailand as it requires some travelling down small village roads to see this scenery at its best.

In southern Thailand there is some fantastic coastal scenery. The provinces of Krabi, Phang Nga, Phuket and Trang have some awesome limestone outcrops which rise straight out of the sea creating some of the most spectacular scenery one will ever see.

Thailand has many national parks which protect areas of forest. A walk in the rainforest is an memorableexperience in itself. Some of the forest in Khao Sok, Khao Yai and Doi Inthanon national parks is very memorable, with huge buttressed trees and mossy branches.

3. Great Fun – Thai people are always ready to have a good time, it is one of their best characteristics. You don’t have to wait for the weekend for a night out in Thailand, Thais are always ready for a party.

Places like Pattaya, Bangkok and Phuket are famous for their nightlife catering to foreigners but it is also really fun to find a nightlife venue usually onlyfrequented by Thais; you will be made welcome and often will be the centre of attention and fun.

Apart from organised nightlife there are lots of fun things to see and do, things that are just a bit different to life at home. From riding around in a tuk-tuk to just seeing people riding around three to a motorcycle, life is never boring in Bangkok. I have laid out some ideas along these lines for people to try when visiting Bangkok here – things to do in Bangkok.

4. Magnificent Temples – Thailand is a Buddhist country and there are thousands of attractivetemples. Some of the famous temples in Bangkok and Chiang Mai are simply amazing but even many of the village temples have their own charm too.

Wat Pra Kaew (the temple of the Emerald Buddha) in Bangkok is a fantastic sight and a great place to go to take photographs in Bangkok with its golden chedi and ornate architecture. Inside the temple itself there are many beautiful wall murals depicting the scenes of the Ramakien. Wat Po is another lovely temple worth visiting in Bangkok.

The ancient temples of Ayutthaya and Sukothai are also very impressive and with an absolute proliferation of ruins at both sites, one can easily spend all day wandering round.

Parts of Thailand were once ruled by the Khmers and in a number of places there are beautiful Khmer-style temples to visit. Phanom Rung in Burirum province is probably the best in Thailand but Phimai, Khao Pra Viharn and Muang Tam are all very nice too.

5. Friendly People – Thai people are generally friendly and polite, making Thailand a pleasant country to visit. However, it would be foolish to think that all Thai people were lovely though and one must still be sensibly cautious, but generally Thai people are non confrontational, happy, ready for a laugh, welcoming and easy-going. These traits make visiting Thailand very enjoyable indeed.

If visitors take the trouble to get off the beaten track it can be really nice to meet Thai people who don’t usually come in contact with foreigners. These people will frequently go out of their way to make you welcome and enjoy your stay. Sometimes Thais in tourist areas can be a bit jaded but usually they will have a smile on their face, speak politely to you and not cause any trouble.

There has been a lot of negative publicity about Thailand over the last year or so but whilst one should not dismiss political and other problems out of hand, Thailand is still a really great place to take a vacation, good value for money and a very safe place to be.
