We, the male populace, had it coming, I suppose. Following millenia of keeping women down with often unfair social mores and sometimes ridiculous fashion demands, we had to expect that someday there would be a reaction, that someday the “fairer sex” would come out swinging, keen to dispel those centuries of repression. Well, newsflash for all you guys out there and congratulations to all the women: that day has come.
Women are officially kicking boys’ butts in the classroom. That’s correct, the ivory towers once populated almost exclusively by males have been invaded, ravaged, and taken over by women. According to figures, 60 percent of college students are now women. Ladies earn 170,000 more bachelor degrees yearly than their male counterparts. The ratios of women to males at business and medical colleges are progressively rising, and, at law schools, women now hold a majority. At the same time, rising numbers of boys from elementary to high school are struggling to meet the least standards, leaving educators and administrators perplexed, unsure of what happened.
Where did this trend come from? A few theories exist. One asserts that women, who have a propensity to move toward cooperation, alliance, multi-tasking, and sitting quietly, are better suited socially for the traditional school structure. Males, on the other hand, who crave exploration, contest, and physical activity, have a propensity to be square pegs in round holes, so to speak, in school. Other theories suggest that the feminist movement, with its relentless bombardment of “girl power” messaging, and the comparative silence from the male side are responsible for this remarkable shift. For almost 40 years now, girls have had armies of proponents telling them they carry the torch for those who didn’t have the chances they did, that they must go out demonstrate that they can do it- for their mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and grand-aunts. Men, on the other hand, sitting high on the hog, have had very little to scrap for; support generally comes for athletics rather than academics.
Two bastions of male domination still linger, however: management and wages. Men still greatly outnumber women in administration roles. Average male pay in similar positions routinely outperform those of their female peers.
It may just be a matter of time until those girls who now populate colleges expand into the companies of the world. It may just be a matter of time before females come to rule business, politics, and life as we know it. It may be just a matter of time before males find themselves wearing really tight corsets and having to watch their figures. (Kiss your 32 oz. steaks and belching contests goodbye!)
All of Mom’s counsel about being polite to women totally makes sense now. Back then, it was about chivalry. In the future, it may be about survival.
